Kuhn continued as a pictorialist until the end of his career and is celebrated for this type of universal family composition.

The Austrian photographer Heinrich Kuehn or Kuhn (1866-1944) was a vocal advocate for photography as an art form, held membership in a variety of camera clubs, and passionately explored new photographic techniques and processes. Kuhn belonged to the so-called Viennese Trifolium, a trio of photographers who took up gum bichromate printing after its rediscovery just before the turn of the century, and in 1896 he was the first to exhibit gum bichromate prints in Germany. Kuhn was a deliberate photographer, sketching out his compositions beforehand and posing his children in a special "photo wardrobe" of black-and-white clothing. He developed a custom soft-focus lens and a hybrid gum-gravure process, which allowed him to produce the soft, textured prints favored by Pictorialists. He was also an enthusiastic adopter of the autochrome, an early color photography process. Alfred Stieglitz exhibited Kuhn's work at his 291 gallery and featured 15 of his photographs in the January 1911 issue of Camera Work. Although the two remained close, their aesthetic interests diverged. As Stieglitz gravitated toward straight photography, Kuhn remained a Pictorialist, continuing to perfect handcrafted images of pastoral and family scenes.

Scottish photographer James Craig Annan (1864-1946) learned photography from his father Thomas Annan. He joined the family business T. & R. Annan & Sons, in 1883. In 1883 Annan accompanied his father to Vienna, Austria to learn the photogravure process from its inventor Karl Klic. The Annans purchased the rights to the process and brought it to Britain. In 1887 after the death of Thomas Annan, James took over the portrait side of the business as well as direction of the photogravure printing. His brother John ran the commercial side of the business. In 1889 the firm T. & R. Annan & Sons became the photographers and photogravure printers to the Queen. In the 1890s Annan made prints of the negatives taken by David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson and produced photogravures from these negatives. In 1892 Annan photographed in the northern Netherlands and in 1894 he traveled to the north of Italy. Annan was elected a member of the pictorial photography group the Linked Ring, London in 1894. In 1904 Annan became the first president of the International Society of Pictorial Photographers ("Pictorial Photography in Britain"). In 1913 Annan photographed in Spain. Annan left the firm around 1939.
