Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Mentawai Islands, Siberut Island, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely wooden paddle, hand-carved from a rich wood that glows with a warm red-brown coloring. The blade is an elongated leaf form, half the length of the entire paddle, and the handle terminates in a lunate curve. A narrow loop of incised geometric decoration is at the nadir of the blade. Size: 5.95" W x 65.5" H (15.1 cm x 166.4 cm); 69.5" H (176.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-old private New England, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s
