Description
1840 U.S. Presidential Campaign Plate titled “Columbian Star” was made by Ridgway, Staffordshire, England for the campaign of President William Henry Harrison. This rare plate is featured with photo in Jeffrey B. Snyder's book, Historical Staffordshire. The brown transferware plate measures 8.75” and is in excellent display worthy condition despite barely visible 2 cm line on rear. There is a wide rim filled with stars, then garlands, surrounding a rural scene of a log cabin and man with a horse drawn plow. Harrison who was a former Governor, General and Senator, wanted to emphasize his connection to the common man in America. It was called the “log cabin and hard cider” campaign, part of which is featured in this commissioned campaign dish. Plate is stamped on reverse, Columbian Star, Oct 28, 1840, Ridgway. This is only fifty one years after George Washington became President.
