Circa 1887 Antique Cabinet Card Photograph with Autograph; Depiction of William Wright Mortimer in National Fencibles uniform. Photograph is by Rice of Washington, D. C. Signed on the reverse in period ink manuscript reading; "W. W. Mortimer, Yours truly". An article in The Washington Times dated November 11, 1894 provides information about the subject. "Lieut. William Wright Mortimer is also a native of Washington. He was a member of the Washington Light Infantry in 1885. In 1887, he joined the Fencibles, and after having served in the ranks as a sergeant, was commissioned second lieutenant August 21, 1889...". Research indicates that the National Fencibles were a popular drill team in Washington, D. C. Approximate mount size is 4-1/4" x 6-1/2". Condition: light surface soiling, occasional light edge wear.
