Description
A magnificent Louis Philippe period Sevres ormolu mounted vase, circa 1847. Handles are serpents holding an apple in their mouth, referring perhaps to Adam and Eve. A beautifully painted scene in the front depicts the story of Paul and Virginie . Paul et Virginie (or Paul and Virginia) is a novel by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, first published in 1788. The novel's title characters are friends since birth who fall in love. The story is set on the island of Mauritius under French rule, then named ÃŽle de France. The gilt bronze base with three masks of noblemen. The mid section of the vase is also an acanthus gilt bronze mount. Please note that we took the vase apart and under the base there is a green LP mark, for dates 1830-1848. Height 23 in. x Dm 9.5 in.
