A CHINESE LACQUERED AND DECORATED CHEST ON STAND Last half 19th century The low rectangular black lacquered chest decorated on all sides with gilded and painted decoration the top conceived as a painting on an unfurled scroll the large central cartouche depicting a scene of a horseman riding out from a fortress entrance over a bridge to greet a visitor in a rickshaw who is being greeted by kneeling figures the cartouche surrounded by swirling clouds with a phoenix in each corner; the four sides of the chest and the rectangular open-frame stand decorated with flowers and symbols isolated on a black ground; two bronze handles on each side two bronze latches on front; with a shellacked paper-lined interior 18 x 36 x 27 inches (45.7 x 91.4 x 68.6 x cm)
