Description
D-59 Outstanding late 15th century Wakazashi. Brown cord wrapped white fishskin grip with gold on darkened metal pheasant menuki. Blackened gun-metal, cutout "waves" (gold background) fuchi-kashira. Shakudo tsuba, round with copper-gold content, which tapers to the edges. Gold spacers and habaki - with a horizontal groove and "cat paw scratches". Excellent 16 ¾" "fish-belly" blade with two 5 5/8" and one 15" fuller and engraved with a stylized dragon chasing the "Tama Pearl". Reverse has Sanskirt Budhist characters. Typical Bizen flowing waves temper line. Long type tip. Tang is signed "Kuni Mitsu" village of Osafune in Bizen Province. Excellent black lacquered scabbard with green cord wrapping. Relief gold crab on stippled obverse of the kozuka handle, which is "wrapped" in gold foil. Reverse is signed "Mitsu Hiro". 4 1/8" blade is engraved with symbolism. Also with a gold washed "Kogai" (skewer). Stippled panel on handle with relief gold embellished game birds. 8 3/8" overall. With a silk storage bag embroidered with traditional "feng" bird and floral work. I
