"Injustice Weighs Heavy" Watercolor on paper signed and dated upper right "Joseph Hirsch '39" Probably painted in Miami, Florida
Born in Philadelphia, Hirsch studied in the Philadelphia realist tradition of Thomas Eakins. He later studied privately with George Luks in New York City (1932–33). Luks, a founder of the Ashcan School and one of "The Eight," a group of painters who captured in their artwork everyday scenes of urban life. Luks introduced Hirsch to the Social Realism movement. He took on the painting of social injustice. In this work, a couple if being pushed near the seashore by an African American gentleman
Provenance: This painting descended in a Miami, Florida family and probably was painted there
