Description
Circle of Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) late 18th-early 19th century. After the 1777 original by Jean-Antoine Houdon. Verso inscribed "HOUDON". This bust is of the son of Architect Theodore Alexandre Brongniart (1739-1843). The subject of the bust, Alexandre (1770-1847) who would grow up to become the director of the Sevres Procelain factory for 47 years (1800-1847). The original bust was presented to the 1777 Paris Salon. The original bust remained in the family until purchased by the Louvre c.1900. Both busts were so widely admired that contemporaries of Houdon, as well as a variety of artists over the years have made versions in teracotta, marble and bronze.
