Description
THE BOOK OF PSALMS, TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINAL HEBREW. London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1854. 9.25" x 6.25". A–I12, K8. Period leather over thin boards, rebacked with paper. ************** From the Scutari Barrack Hospital, where Florence Nightingale worked, with inscriptions from the Hospital to endpaper, title, and first leaf, stating that this book is to be lent to those with impaired vision. This is due to the relatively large type used in the printing of this edition. The hospital at Scutari (near Constantinople) was in terrible condition upon Florence Nightingale's arrival in November of 1854. Florence and her nurses improved the medical and sanitary conditions greatly, and they also introduced reading rooms (where the present volume was likely perused by patients in need of spiritual solace.) As the date of printing (1854) of the present book coincides with the arrival of Nightingale and her team of nurses, it is likely that the present volume was brought by them to Scutari.
