19th century manuscript penmanship book of William Dowling, early to mid-1850s, American. 6" x 4". In period limp sheep covers. Approximately 68 leaves, and containing over 30 drawings and/or calligraphy finished in watercolors and several others in black ink and/or pencil. The text contains copies of various poems, Bible verses, and similar. Provenance: With pencil note inside of front cover, "My great great grandfather's book William Dowling."
Condition
Covers worn with a few small tears/chips, contents with occasional soiling, moderate toning, 3 leaves chipped with some loss of text, contents loose and some detached.
