SHELTON SISTERS, FORSYTH CO., NORTH CAROLINA RIB-TYPE WOVEN-SPLINT EGG BASKET, white oak, the delicately woven converging-rib kidney form with wrapped double rim and arched handle bearing X-form supports. Original dry natural surface. Late 19th/early 20th century. 6 1/2" HOA, 4" H (rim), 6" D (rim).
Good overall condition with scattered minor losses to rim wrap and body.
Provenance: From an important Virginia private collection.
Catalogue Note: Miss Mary Shelton (1837-1921) and her sister Miss Eliza Shelton (1845-1933) were highly esteemed Forsyth Co., NC basketmakers. Both were recorded in the 1910 U.S. Census as "basket maker at home". They were widely known not only for their extremely fine weaving, but also for cutting and splitting their own splint.
