Item Details
Description
This is a veduta of Florence by Giuseppe Zocchi from the mid 1700’s. Zocchi was an Italian painter and printmaker active in Florence and best known for his vedute of the city. A veduta, or view, was a highly detailed, sometimes large-scale painting or print of a cityscape or nearby vista. In Italian, the plural of veduta is vedute, and the vedute in this series depict palaces, convents, bridges, and the canals of Florence, all in the Tuscany region of the country; Zocchi’s name is in the margin on the lower left or lower right for each veduta. The illustrations were originally dedicated to Maria Teresa of Austria and became prototypes for similar views of Rome, Venice, and other European cities. There were 24 plates in the series, so the twelve Zocchi pieces in the auction comprise about half of the views for the set. Sight: 9 1/2 x 13 1/2 in. Overall: 11 1/4 x 15 1/4 in. Please note that all sales are final. No refunds will be given under any circumstances.
