Middle East.- Shaw (Thomas) Travels, or Observations relating to several parts of Barbary and the Levant, 2 vol. in 1 including Supplement, first edition, half-title, title printed in red & black with engraved title vignette of Sheldonian theatre, 32 engraved maps and plates on 29 leaves (3 printed on both sides), several folding or double-page, engraved head- & tail-pieces, initials and decorations, woodcut diagrams, book label to paste down, occasional scattered marginal worming or soiling but generally a very good clean copy, contemporary calf, a little rubbed and scuffed, covers detached, [Blackmer 1533], folio, Oxford, at the Theatre, 1738-46.

⁂ "Shaw was chaplain to the English factory at Algiers from 1720 to 1733. During this period he visited Egypt, Sinai, Palestine, Cyprus and most of North Africa...[The work] is especially esteemed for its botanical and zoological plates, in addition to the information Shaw imparts on the antiquities, geology and geography of the areas he visited." (Blackmer). The supplement was issued in response to Richard Pococke's attack in his Description of the East, published 1743-45.
