Description
A large and impressive cast bronze Buddhist bodhisattva sculpture modeled as one of the Eighteen Arhats or Luohans, a popular subject in Asian art, an original follower of Gautama Buddha who has followed the Noble Eightfold Path and attained the four stages of enlightenment. Exquisitely modeled in the lalitasana pose or mudra, called "the royal position" or "royal ease," a relaxed pose typical in portraits of religious figures whose "kingly" attributes are being emphasized. The figure sits with one leg tucked inwards and the other hanging down ("pendent"). His hands are modeled in what may be the abhayamudra, or "gesture of fearlessness," which represents protection, peace, benevolence, and dispelling fear. Exquisite iridescent patina. Good overall condition with minor wear. Measures 26 in. x 13 1/2 in. x 12 in. Hill Auction Gallery will not ship. Gallery will refer a local shipper for international buyers. Purchaser pick up available upon request.
