Ten thousand people converged on the Hamilton County courthouse in 1884 and burned it to the ground to protest the conviction of William Berner, a white man who was found guilty of manslaughter for killing his employer. The photograph show scenes of barricaded streets. This is one of fifteen photo's by the publisher, measuring 7" x 10" (17.78 x 25.4 cm) each. Many Cincinnatians felt the verdict in Berner's case should have been murder. In a similar case, a mixed-race man was convicted of murder and hanged for the same crime. Several prominent citizen who were tired of the city's corrupt judicial system called a meeting at the Music Hall on March 28 to protest the jury's decision. This meeting turned into a riot in which more than fifty people were killed, about two hundred were injured, and the Hamilton County courthouse was destroyed.
