Description
Battle Maps and Charts of the American Revolution with Explanatory Notes and School History References by Henry B. Carrington. 41 maps originally drawn by Col. Carrington from 1846 to 1876. This modern edition is nearly twice the size of the scarce 1881 edition that it is taken from. The author began working on the volume in 1846 in conference with Washington Irving. Henry Beebee Carrington was a lawyer, professor, prolific author, and an officer in the United States Army during the American Civil War and in the Old West during Red Cloud's War. A noted engineer, he constructed a series of forts to protect the Bozeman Trail, but suffered a major defeat at the hands of the warchief Red Cloud. Following the Civil War, the 18th Infantry was stationed in the West. Carrington was then assigned as commander of the Mountain District, Department of the Missouri, in 1866 and moved his regimental headquarters to Colorado. Assigned to protect the Bozeman Trail, he built and personally manned the remote Fort Phil Kearny during Red Cloud's War. The maps show America in 1775 to be a long, thin line of small communities spread mainly along the Eastern coast. Given the scarcity of a road network, the country was divided into three natural theaters of operation—the New England, Middle and Southern Colonies. Each could exist independently because of the decentralized nature of political authority and economic self-sufficiency of each region. British domination over one region had little or no effect on the others. The same was true of the five major cities—New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Newport and Charleston. The vastness of the American continent and its varied nature raised other problems. Much of the terrain was rugged and densely wooded, making it hard to conduct warfare in the traditional European manner. America was better suited for guerilla warfare, which favored the locals. In the end, two major geographical considerations proved too much for the British generals—the extent of the continent, and the great distance separating the American theater of war from Britain, which made it difficult to supply the army overseas. Carrington’s maps trace the course of the war: the major campaigns were concentrated in New England and Canada in 1775, and in the Middle Colonies during the years 1776 and 1777. From 1778 to 1781, the main military operations shifted to the Southern theater of operations. Clean and sound with just a hint of rubbing to tips and spine ends. Jacket with one small chip to bottom spine. Lovely example. 11.375 x 17.25. 88 pp.
