Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, La Tolita (sometimes Tumaco) culture, ca. 350 BCE to 350 CE. A striking, lifelike head from a larger statue, its entire surface coated in a grey pigment. The face is sensitive, with wide eyes and ears studded with piercings that, like the pierced nose, likely once had gold rings or feathers threaded through them. On the north coast of Ecuador and into Colombia, this culture is a continuation of the earlier Chorrera style, and is known for their realistic human faces and figures. Size: 3.75" W x 3.55" H (9.5 cm x 9 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away.

Condition
Head is a fragment from a larger statue, and neck has a rough texture as a result. Wear on surface commensurate with age, including small chips and losses. Nice remaining form and detail, especially on the face.
