Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 CE. (Clothing is ancient; doll form dates to modern era.) A charming mother and child doll - the mother holding the child close to her body - with clothing skillfully made from various textiles of woven camelid (llama or alpaca) and cotton threads. A very sweet example that displays exceptional skill and various techniques; note that the digits of the reed limbs are meticulously defined and wound with threads, and both figures wear finely woven vestments. Scholars believe that such dolls were created to represent mortals rather than supernatural deities or spirits. Size: 4" W x 11" H (10.2 cm x 27.9 cm); 11" H (27.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection; ex-Allan Davis collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, before 1990
