East Asia, Korea, middle Silla Dynasty, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A handbuilt standing clay doll (Tou), wearing a twin-horned headdress, and holding a horn or other attribute in both hands. The Silla people called these dolls "tou" - a Korean word that literally means "doll made out of clay". Tou were made not only to depict human figures but also to represent various animals, everyday items, and houses. Scholars belive that these types of figurines were likely used for shamanic or incantation purposes as well as grave objects. Size: 2.375" H (6 cm)

Provenance: Estate of William Stockton, Colorado, USA; acquired between July 20, 1966 and January 7, 1974 while Mr. Stockton was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. During this period he traveled primarily to Korea, but also to Japan, Vietnam, and other countries in Southeast Asia.
