Description
A FRENCH SCHOOL WHITE MARBLE FIGURAL GROUP, "Angelica & Medoro," CIRCA 1860, nicely carved and detailed as the classically robed young lovers recumbent on the stylized groundwork with Angelica leaning on Medoro's lap, while gazing at his adoring eyes as he holds her against his chest and leans against a tree trunk that she has inscribed "Angelica / Medoro." Height: 15 3/4" Width: 22" Depth: 11"Â Â Note: The romantic love story that this marble group Angelica and Medoro derives from is the 16th century Italian epic by Ludovico Ariosto "Orlando Furioso." In the story Angelica is an Asian princess at the court of Charlemagne who meets and falls in love with Medoro, a Moor knight and they in turn elope to China. This marble depicts the moment in their travels when they are resting against a tree trunk that she has recently carved with their names.
