Description
1886 1ed Parnell Movement IRISH Home Rule IRELAND United Kingdom Pigott Suicide
Charles Parnell was a 19th-century Irish politician who is best remembered for his roles in the Home Rule Movement and founding of the National Land League. In 1870, the Irish government sought self-governance from the United Kingdom – it took more than a decade for a bill to arrive for vote in the House of Commons. In 1886, the year the bill was first introduced, T.P. O’Connor published the book ‘The Parnell Movement’ which coincided with the hopeful political bill.
The contents of this book led to an interesting controversy in 1887 around a series of murders –
The year after the ‘Parnell movement’, Parnell himself was accused by British reporters for his role in a series of murders based on fake letters supposedly written by Parnell. The letters were eventually found to be forged by anti-Parnell Irish journalist Richard Pigott, who after being found out, committed suicide for his accusations.
