Hendrick van Rheede was a 17th-century Dutch naturalist who published a famous treatise on Dutch botany, ‘Hortus Malabaricus’. The Dutch East India Company found that botanical books were useful for helping fight diseases for sailors, and Rheede’s treatise was a thorough compendium of the value of plants in the south Malabar region of India.
This 1689 Dutch edition includes contributions by other Dutch botanists and naturalists including Johannes Casearius, Abraham van Poot, and Arnold Syen.
