Item Details

Description

19th century boxwood netsuke of a seated rakan (also called arhat - one of the 16 Buddha’s original disciples) wearing a monk’s robe and with his hands around his raised knee. I believe the image is that of rakan Banabashi (Vanavasin in Sanskrit) - he seems to be the only one often shown with his hands on his knee. Superb carving - see the expression of extreme concentration on his portrait quality face, beautiful rhythm of his interlaced fingers and wonderful flow of the lines of his robe. Swinging metal loop on the bottom of his back for hanging, excellent patina. Comes from the collection of His Royal Highness Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester - a tag is attached. Height 1 3/8 inches.
