Description
Blanket made from sealskin, rabbit and otter fur, heads and paws, with caribou whiskers. Mickey Mouse cotton print backing. Roughly 36" x 39". Fine condition.According to the consignor: "This piece was actually made for sale to visiting non-Eskimos. Every day, the people from all over the Delta who came to the Hospital Outpatient Clinic in Bethel would bring articles to sell, mainly to the non-Eskimo Doctors, Nurses and Technicians who worked in the Public Health Service Hospital. I am not aware of such a piece being used as a blanket, but the sealskin is highly prized to use to make slippers, gloves, hats and parkas. It also has some spiritual role, used by the elders as a rug on which to introduce their young children or grandchildren to the village, usually at a potlatch, as a sort of rite of passage. As I recall, I paid about $200.00 for this one, made in one of the lower villages of the Kuskokwim River." Provenance: From the Collection of William F Bergen, D.O.
