UNION SOLDIER & RIFLE & BAYONET CASED TINTYPE

Item Details

Description

Cased tintype. This Union Private is full standing. He holds either a Model 1855 or a Model 1861 Percussion Rifle-Musket in caliber .58 fitted with a bayonet. Split full case.

In response to a question from a possible bidder as to whether this tintype is dark or dirty: There's a light side and a dark side, which actually makes it more intriguing. Note that his face is light, and the rifle is positioned on the light side. Most of the specks are simply dirty glass. Clean the glass and most of them are gone. There's a little bit of dust on the plate, and in the upper right corner there's an abundance of emulsion which reflects back some light. The plate itself is in very good condition.
