Description
The September 24, 1945 issue of LIFE Magazine, with signature of James Jimmy Stewart (1908–1997), American actor and military officer with a film career that spanned over 55 years from 1935 and 1991 and 80 films. With the strong morality he portrayed both on and off screen, Stewart epitomized the "American ideal" in 20th Century America. A licensed pilot, Stewart enlisted in the Army Air Corps when the United States entered the Second World War. After fighting in the European theater of war, he attained the rank of colonel and received several awards for service. He remained in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and was promoted to brigadier general in 1959. He retired in 1968, and was awarded the United States Air Force Distinguished Service Medal.
