Description
A Yoruba Epa mask. Nigeria, West Africa. Bird finials detach. 20th century. Wood and pigment. 56" x 18" x 16". Epa masks were used during ceremonies to commemorate ancestral warriors. Condition: includes stand. Cracks, abrasions, chipping, and insect damage throughout. Very heavy. The inside of the mask tends to shed where stand hits it.
Provenance: Aaron Furman, New York. Private New York Collection. A similar mask can be found at the Brooklyn Museum. Accession No. 70.107.13.
