Attributed to Gil Kane - Hulk & His Superhero Friends Original Pitch Presentation Board (Marvel c. 1986). Original Marvel presentation pitch board of Hulk & His Superhero Friends. Circa 1986. Attributed to Gil Kane. Approximately 16 x 34 inches. The board is in good condition with minor wear from production/storage as pictured. It was salvaged from Marvel Productions Ltd. back in the late 80s/early 90s when Marvel were moving out of their offices in Hollywood, California. The previous owner ran a recycling company that was tasked to remove all the remaining artwork from the studio before they moved out the following day. From what he described, there was artwork overflowing from shelves and mounds discarded over every floor. Fair to say this is probably the only surviving artwork from this concept. Due to the limited information on this piece, it has taken considerable time and effort to confirm whether or not this piece was related to either Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends or The Incredible Hulk. Turns out this would have been an entirely separate show, following the success of the previous two that featured Hulk as the main focus, but incorporated many of his friends that appeared in both shows. Another working title from this show was: The Incredible Hulk and his Fantastic Friends: as seen in the original advertisement from Variety Magazine pictured here and included with the board. After consulting with a handful of key artists that worked on Hulk/Spider-Man, most attributed this work to Gil Kane, with other hands doing changes and paste-ups. The entire piece aside from the title is completely hand-inked. Hulks face appears to be an inked pasted correction, potentially concealing a discarded design. The board itself is from a very well-known brand of the time, Crescent Cardboard Company, used by many studios.If you are a hardcore fan of the characters featured on this board, you will find a ton of trivia on each character design. My favourite is that the Spider-Man design was directly copied from the front cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #49. Characters featured: Hulk, Spider-Man, Dr Doom, She-Hulk, Thor, Dr Strange, Kraven the Hunter, Medusa, Dr Octopus, Invisible Woman, Captain America, Red Skull, Prince Namor, Iceman, Ka-Zar, Cheetah, Mr Fantastic and one female character totaling 18. This is a one of a kind piece and extremely special piece!
