Head Carving with fine patination, 3 1/4 x 2 1/4 x 1 3/4 inches
Description: Superb carving, halitosis iris shell eyes with beautiful patina. Malcolm Kirk (prior provenance) believed this fragment is from the coaster area of Grisborne, in the East Coast District. Bands of curling decoration on V-shapped forehead continues behind the ears to the ears to back of head.
The fragment head was part of another object, most likely a "Treasure or Feather Box". Comparable fragment heads can be referenced through the British Museum and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa's extensive online archives.
