Description
R. S. PIKE (DATES UNKNOWN) TO EUROPE / UNITED STATES LINES / LEVIATHAN. Circa 1925.
31x20 inches, 78x52 cm.
Condition B+: small replaced losses, repaired tears and restoration over abrasions in margins and upper text.
The Leviathan was originally a German ship named the Vaterland that was seized by the United States during World War I and renamed. In 1923, the United States Shipping Board transferred the ship over to the United States Lines. Though not in fact "The largest ship in the world," (she was second to White Star's Majestic), the ship was a headline-maker and considered to be one of the best-known liners in the western world. This image exists with different text variations. Pike designed several posters for the Leviathan, and for each image he implied the massive size of the vessel by never depicting the whole ship inside the frame of the image, as if it was simply too big to fit. Weallans p. 93 (var).
