Description
A large heavy wood carving done with expert fine workmanship. He was part of an altar. A heavy dense wood has been carved in the shape of a Bodhisattva. The figure is seated with one hand on his knee and one hand in the air. The carving is very old with a well worn surface. The wood has been covered in gesso and then pigmented with red, black and gold. The base is flat and natural. There are rings from a lathe. There is a rectangular hole in his back. He was probably attached to another piece of wood. MEASUREMENTS 9 ¾” (24.8 cm) tall x 4 3/8” (11.0 cm) wide x 4” (10.2 cm) deep. Weighs 1 lb 4.3 oz (575 g) CONDITION The figure has lost the end of his nose and has a finger missing. There are numerous losses to the gesso and pigment. He has the look of age. A wonderful very old wood carving that has much character and substance. A veritable work of sculpture.
