***Auction Highlight*** (1670-1675)St Patrick Farth New Jersey Breen-216 Graded f, fine By USCG. Obverse: Mitred Saint Patrick in bishop´s garb, holding long patriarchal cross in left arm, preaching away monsters an serpents into the sea. Cathedral topped by three crosses to right. The Legend Reads: QVIESCAT PLEBS : ("May the People Be at Peace"). and on the Reverse: Large crown above King David playing harp. Crown above.Comment: The splash of brass on the obverse of the copper coins is intended to create the illusion that the royal crown that King David glances at is made of gold! Legend: FLOREAT : REX : ("May the King Flourish")In 1681 it is supposed that Mark Newby, a Quaker who emigrated from Ireland, had brought a substantial quantity of these copper coins to North America when he relocated to West New Jersey, settling in Camden.
