Description
A choice Taino carved stone Death Head, c. AD 1000 - 1500, of hard volcanic basalt and carved in remembrance of a loved one with nice style and wearing a geometric headband. These were kept in the home of the living to feel a sense of closeness with the deceased and are an evolution from a much earlier period where real skulls where kept. 6 3/8 x 5 7/16 x 3 15/16 in (16.2 x 14.2 x 10 cm). Comes with an authentication report from Stoetzer, Inc, Fine Art Services, as well as a COA from Butler Authentication, Nacogdoches, TX. A fine example of Taino Stoneworking and a very interesting cultural item! Ex Illinois private collection.
