Description
Ancient Northern Europe, early Viking or Anglo-Saxon, ca. 7th to 9th century CE. A forged-iron axe head with a vertical blade head on one end and a lengthy horizontal head on the opposite end. The integral tools project from either side of a central socketing shaft decorated with a pair of protruding flanges on both the top and bottom peripheries. This axe head perhaps held more utilitarian value rather than use in warfare due to its multifunctional design that could both shape soft materials like wood and break apart harder substances like stone or ice. Size: 12.6" L x 3.375" W (32 cm x 8.6 cm)
