Description
This remarkable wood sculpture is a great compositional example of this art form: the cigar store Indian trade sign. It is life size and the subtle color palette the artist used looks even better with the patina of time on it. He is wearing a full headdress and what is probably a mountain lion mantle on his shoulders. Most cigar store sculptures are very static, whereas this Chief is relatively dynamically posed, canted forward with one leg raised on a block, while shielding his eyes from the Sun. In addition, the realism of the stoic face is a very real testament to the sculptor's technical skill. His left hand is holding a stack of tempting tobacco products. A real find in all original condition. With a relatively long vertical age crack through the middle of the torso, with wear paint fading consistent with a painted porous material, and a crack in the raised arm at the shoulder that should be repaired, however, this great early piece of folk art is all original, including the paint, and an example worthy of any collection. Attributed to Samuel Robb and pictured in "Cigar Store Figures" by A. W. Pendergast and W. Porter Ware, page 12. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. Condition: (Good). Dimensions: 84" x 24" x 22".
