LARGE MATA ORTIZ BLACK POT by RUBEN LOZANA (LUCERO), ca. 1970s Condition: Excellent Mark: In beautiful engraved (hard-to-read) script is "R Lozano" Description: The pot's shape looks more Hopi or Ildefonso than Acoma. The 2" rounded base and 4" rim, are strongly contrasted with the very wide girdle that gives a streamlined look. Note: He started potting between late 1970s and early 1980s. We assume he was born around 1960. He uses red clay, saturating it with gunmetal, to get the brilliant jet black. He uses his wife, Maria Anastasia Villa (de Lozano), to do much of the shaping. First they press the foot into the rounded base form, and then they form the wall from slabs of clay. They achieve extremely thin walls, which makes them fragile but contribute to their outstanding quality. See The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz, p. 111. 8.5"d x 7.25"h.

We box and ship ourselves, to keep shipping costs low. We do not use a packaging service, unless the customer prefers us to use them. We can ship either USPS or Fed Ex Ground.

We deliver most larger pieces ourselves on the west coast and we make a loop around the US within 60 days after the auction. No matter where you live in the lower 48 states, we look forward to personally meeting you and delivering larger pieces directly to your house. Most larger pieces can be hand delivered for $300 almost anywhere in the lower 48 states.
