Limited edition serigraph 15 1/2 x 18 in., 24 1/2 x 30 1/2 in. (framed). Born in London, Janet Treby is a painter who does abstraction that includes figurative subjects, primarily females, and mostly in oil. She says her best work "is done in a sort of stream of conscousness . . .it's like drowning in a sea of consciousness---a sort of meditative state." Treby was raised in the small village of Bedordshire, and from that experience learned to love the countryside and especially the wildlife inhabitants. By age eleven, she knew she wanted to be an artist, and when she had finished her basic schooling, she enrolled at Barnfield College in Bedfordshire and took a two year basic course. Then she earned a degree at West Surrey College of Art and Design with majors in sculpture and printmaking, and studied at the Slade School, focusing on mezzotints.During the Slade School period, she describes herself as doing the "bohemian thing", living in a studio apartment in Wapping and fraternizing with fellow students. In the 1980s, she had her first one-person exhibition, and won several printmaking awards including The Lloyds Young Printmaker of the Year and the Elizabeth Greenshield Award. She also gave art lectures at the Slade School, and did odd jobs to earn money---all which reinforced her determination to be a full-time artist.Many of her subjects are nude figures and are done from her feeling that "the body holds experiences, which even if the figure has its back to you it tells you its own story at that particular moment in time."
