ACOMA BLACK ON WHITE POT, with WHITE PETAL PATTERN, by LOUIS & NADINE MANSFIELD (She was born in 1968, in Acoma, and was taught by her mother), ca. 1990s. Condition: Excellent Mark: On bottom: "Acoma / Louis, Nay / Mansfield" Description: It has a black rim. The contrast is so strong that the white background reads like the white petals were painted on a black background. The pattern has become very popular. Marie Chino used base separated four-petal patterns, but I haven't seen any old over-all pattern like these. The and upper inside would traditionally have had a reddish buff slip. It was traditionally potted, except the foot is flat instead of concave. Everything about the glaze is untraditional: The slip is very slightly pink. Both the white and black appear to be commercial paint, which many new potters are using. The white areas were burnished before the black paint was applied. The black was applied with a commercial brush. Note: Southern Pueblo Pottery, p. 200, says they were taught by the Acoma mother-in-law, Betty Ramirez-Concho. 8.5"d x 6.25"h.
