Poor People's Campaign Group

A group of documents, printed addresses, letters, and a photograph relating to the Poor People's Campaign and the Civil Rights Movement. The small archive includes the following items:

A black and white photograph of Coretta Scott King, measuring 4" x 5". Mounted onto card stock to measure 6" x 11" overall.

A Typed Letter Signed to Martin Luther King's Secretary. 1p, measuring 7.25" x 10.5", Washington, D.C., dated November 28, 1959. Addressed to Maude L. Ballou, from William J. McConnell of The Statler Hilton, declining a room accommodation request due to the hotel being booked to capacity.

"The Mississippi Challenge: Some Questions and Answers". 20pp, 8.5" x 11", Mississippi, dated August 8, 1965. Presented by Joseph Meissner and Steven R. Nelson of the Washington Human Rights Project, the document relates to a case brought before the House of Representatives, challenging the legitimacy of the white Mississippi Democrats in Congress. The argument made was that African Americans had been systematically excluded from the election, and thus new elections should be held.

A Poor People's Campaign Fact Sheet Packet. 10pp, measuring 8.5" x 11", no place, dated 1968. A printed packet for Poor People in America: Economic Fact Sheet, "For SCLC Staff Use Only."

Address Prepared by Rev. Dr. Ralph David Abernathy. 6pp, measuring 8.5" x 11", Washington, D.C., dated June 19, 1968. A speech made for Solidarity Day March in support of the Poor People's Campaign. At the top of page one has been written "Gaines noted, page 2" in green ink.

Poor People's Campaign Sponsoring Organizations Document. 14p, measuring 8.5" x 11", no place, no date. Marked as "Supplement #3" and includes the Organization group names, addresses, and person of contact.

All of these documents have varying degrees of light toning. Most are stapled together. The photograph has been taped to the card stock, with some adhesive staining and residue. The typed letter has mail folds.
