Description
Chinese Art.- [Wesdin (Johann Philipp)] Monumenti Indici del Museo Naniano..., engraved plate of Amita Buddha figure, lightly water-stained, modern paste-paper wrappers, Padua, 1799 § Langdon (William B.) A Descriptive Catalogue of the Chinese Collection...at St.George's Place, Hyde Park Corner, London, first English edition, wood-engraved frontispiece and 7 plates, some light spotting, slightly browned, original blind-stamped green cloth titled in gilt, a little rubbed and stained, spine faded, [Cordier 79], 8vo, 1842.
⁂ The first is a scarce monograph on the Eastern antiquities in the collection of the brothers Bernardo and Jacopo Nani in Venice, mostly concerning the iconographically complex Chinese Amita Buddha figure carved in soapstone illustrated in the plate.
The collection of "Ten Thousand Chinese Things" was formed by Nathan Dunn, an American tea-trader in China, with the aim of educating Westerners in the ways and arts of China. It was first exhibited in Philadelphia and then in London, to rave reviews and vast audiences, but when it was brought over here again to coincide with the Great Exhibition of 1851 it was not so well-received and most of it ended up being auctioned at Christie's.
