Description
Beautiful sixth-plate daguerreotype in half case, identified on accompanying tag as noted author and educator Mary Tyler Peabody (1806-1887), newly widowed by Horace Mann (1796-1859) circa 1860. She is dressed in severe almost masculine clothing with black triple stripe trim, wearing black lace fingerless gloves, with her distinctive flat hair and drifting eye, 3 1/2" x 3". Fine condition. Mary and her husband were both heavily involved in abolitionism, school reform and Whig politics in Boston. She wrote "Flower People", "Christianity on the Kitchen", "Culture in Infancy", "Life of Horace Mann" and "Juanita" between 1838 and 1887.
