Description
Patty, William Arthur (1884 - 1960), Waterfront, oil on canvas laid down on masonite panel, 22 x 24 inches, signed lower left, framed in a period Arts and Crafts frame measuring 28 x 30 inches. A landscape painter, graphics artist and muralist, William Patty was born in New Hartford, Connecticut, and by age 16, was earning a living as a painter. He studied in New York at the National Academy of Design and at the Acadamie Julian in Paris. Among his teachers were Edgar M. Ward, Robert Brandegee, and Charles Noel Flagg. In the 1920s, he worked in Brooklyn, although he was in San Antonio and Mexico in 1935 painting portraits. In 1936, he moved to Southern California and settled for the remainder of his life in Laguna Beach where he died in 1960. Exhibitions included the Society of Independent Artists, American Artists Professional League and Laguna Beach Art Association.
