Description
after PHILIPPE POITEVIN (French 1831-1907) A PAIR OF PATINATED METAL EQUESTRIAN GROUPS, "Hippolyta and Hippolytus," THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY, each modeled in a dramatic pose on a stylized groundwork base and signed "POITEVIN," raised on a conforming ebonized wood plinth, one cast as the fallen Amazonian Queen Hippolyta wearing her diadem amidst billowing hair above loose robes, secured at the waist by her mystical war belt and struggling to control her rearing stead with one hand and the other clutching a dagger on the ground before her large shield; together with the group of the terror-stricken Hippolytus being dragged to an untimely death while trying to free his hands caught in the reins of his frightened stallion, each height: 23", width: 21 1/2", depth: 9". Provenance: Lifelong Collection of Clocks and Antiques, Navasota, Texas.
Condition
