Description
Etruscan 2nd half of 6th cent. B.C. Clay. H. 37.5 cm (with handle); 27 cm. (excluding handle). A monumental chalice-shaped vessel in "bucchero pesante” with a deep, flaring cup and broad, high strap handle which is decorated with two incised saltire squares on the inner face. The tall stem flares slightly towards the foot. Bucchero is a form of black-glazed pottery characteristic of the apogee of Etruscan urban culture in the late 7th and 6th cent. B.C. Condition: Reassembled from large fragments with some areas of fillings at joins. Foot reattached and partially restored. Formerly priv. coll. W.A. until 1976; thereafter, priv. coll. E.W., Riehen. Thence by descent in the family.
