Description
ARTIST: ANSEL ADAMS
TITLE: 'The Tetons and Snake River, Grand Teton NP, WY, 1942'
MEDIUM: Silver Gelatin
IMAGE SIZE: 7 1/2 x 9 1/4 in
DESCRIPTION: This silver gelatin contact print is untrimmed and unmounted. Archivally cornered onto 8-ply Museum Board backing that is hinged with an overmat. Numbered "1.19" by an unknown hand in pencil verso. The Gallery has been unable to locate another print of this image, nor find it reproduced at this time. It is a variant of Adams' infamous photograph of the Grand Tetons and Snake River, and possibly the only example.
This collection of 20 proof prints by Ansel Adams offers a rare glimpse into the working process of America's most notable photographer. Without stamps or signatures, these prints were likely intended for reference or reproduction, and not for display as finished "fine art" prints. The soft, warm tones of the paper on which these prints were made, along with the image dates and apparent lack of fluorescence, suggest they were printed around the 1940s, although this assumption isn't certain. The group can be traced back to a Private Collection, Texas; followed by the G Ray Hawkins Gallery, from whom the present owner acquired them in 2012. Many of these images were rarely, if ever, printed or published, with several images previously unknown to the Gallery.
