Description
Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 900 CE. A lustrous ornament of an ovoid form that is formed from a hammered sheet of high-grade (91.71%) silver. The accessory exhibits passages of stippling in repousse along the periphery that creates a textured border as well as along the interior body that perhaps illustrated abstract iconography or perhaps outlined an inner decorative gap. Silver ornamentation like this was meant to adorn countless items in a Norseman's life such as clothing, horse accoutrements, personal belongings, and weaponry. These are fragments from a larger composition. Repairs to two smaller pieces as shown. Slight bending to overall form of each piece, with softening to some areas of stippling, and minor abrasions. Nice, lustrous patina throughout.
