Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, southwestern Argentina or south-central Chile, Mapuche people, ca. 1500 CE. A hand-carved smoking pipe with a narrow mouthpiece projecting off one end of the bulbous body as well as a tab-shaped thumb rest poking out from the front of the carved-out receptacle. The top of the thumb rest bears incised crosshatch patterns for increased grip, and the pipe is covered in smooth surface textures. Size: 3.8" L x 0.9" W (9.7 cm x 2.3 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Bettina Schwimmer collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA, collected from 1955 to 2006

Condition
Minor nicks to body, receptacle, and mouthpiece, with light char marks within receptacle, and light pitting across some exterior surfaces, otherwise intact and very good. Nice remains of incised details.
