**First Time At Auction**
Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A cast-bronze ornament presenting the head and neck of a griffin with a curved beak, a piercing gaze, serrated scales coursing down the back of the neck, and slender scales lining the front of the neck. The griffin (or gryphon) is a beast with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. According to Graeco-Roman mythology, griffins lived in the Riphaean Mountains of Scythia and guarded rich gold deposits. A fine example covered in lustrous patina. Size: 0.8" W x 1.8" H (2 cm x 4.6 cm)
Provenance: private Raleigh, North Carolina, USA collection, acquired via descent from father; ex-private collection, purportedly excavated at Ephesus
