Description

Tall 18th century staghorn netsuke of a standing sennin Bushishi holding an open scroll in his hands and wearing a leaf cape. He was able to ride on a magic scroll and to ascend to heaven, if he wished. Wonderful face with slightly mad expression and horn inlaid pupils, clever use of natural stag antler shape to depict the scroll, nicely defined robe lines. Porous center of a stag antler on the bottom is plugged (see photo details) as is usual in such pieces, and plug is carved as part of the netsuke. Beautiful wear consistent with age, very pleasant patina turning light honey color. Height 4 1/2 inches (11.7 cm).
